# Minibus and minivan rental in Bangkok, with driver

> For nine to fourteen passengers, the Toyota Hiace and Toyota Commuter are what Bangkok actually runs on. Here is how they differ, and how much luggage really fits.

**Short answer.** In Bangkok, “minibus” and “minivan” both normally mean a **Toyota Hiace (9–12 seats)** or a **Toyota Commuter (12–14 seats)**, hired with a driver. Rates start at 1,400 THB per hour and 9,000 THB for a ten-hour day. The real constraint is almost never seats — it is luggage.

- **Vehicles:** [Toyota Hiace](https://www.pimstarter.com/vehicle-toyota-hiace.html) 9–12 seats · [Toyota Commuter](https://www.pimstarter.com/vehicle-toyota-commuter.html) 12–14 seats
- **Published bags:** Hiace 6 · Commuter 8 — the Commuter is the larger vehicle on both counts
- **From:** 1,400 THB per hour · 9,000 THB per 10-hour day
- **Driver:** Included
- **Typical use:** Conference delegations, family reunions, airport groups, event shuttles
- **Larger groups:** Multiple vans in convoy, coordinated to arrive together

## Hiace or Commuter?

They are close relatives — the Commuter is the longer, higher-capacity body — and the Commuter is the larger vehicle on both seats and luggage. The choice is therefore less about capacity than about how long you will be sitting in it.

| | Toyota Hiace | Toyota Commuter |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Seats | 9–12 | 12–14 |
| Published bags | 6 | 8 |
| Best at | Groups of nine to twelve who are not at maximum luggage | Maximum headcount and maximum luggage — the fleet's largest vehicle |
| Watch for | Six bags are published; the number of passengers alone does not establish the baggage load | Confirm usable luggage space with the actual 14-passenger layout |
| Comfort over 2 hours | Reasonable | Tighter in the rear rows when full |

The practical reading: if headcount or luggage is the binding constraint, book the Commuter. If the group is nine to twelve travelling moderately light, the Hiace is the more comfortable room for the same job. If both numbers are near maximum, ask whether the proposed configuration works or additional transport is needed.

## The luggage arithmetic nobody does before booking

Published seats and bags are separate specifications. The sources do not show a loading plan for every combination; ask the team to check your actual group, bag sizes and seating layout. The failure mode is specific and common: fourteen people and fourteen suitcases arrive at Suvarnabhumi expecting one Commuter, and it does not fit — not because the operator misled anyone, but because nobody put both numbers in the same sentence.

- **Count passengers and bags separately**, and send both figures. Include golf bags, pushchairs, instruments and sample cases by name.
- **Over about ten passengers with full checked luggage**, plan on two vehicles or a luggage van — the Commuter’s eight published bags is the fleet ceiling. It is cheaper than the scene in the arrivals hall.
- **Child seats take a seat each**, and the restraint type and installation need to be confirmed for each child.
- **Convoys should be booked as a convoy**, so the vehicles are dispatched together and arrive together.

## What groups use a minibus for

### Conference and MICE shuttles
Hotel to BITEC, IMPACT or Queen Sirikit on a repeating timetable, with a vehicle held between sessions.

### Group arrivals
One flight, one group, one meeting point in arrivals — rather than four taxis and four different arrival times.

### Family reunions and weddings
Grandparents, children and a lot of bags, moving as one party instead of splitting across cars.

### Group day trips
Ayutthaya, Pattaya and Kanchanaburi with the whole party in one vehicle and one commentary.

## Minibus and minivan hire: common questions

**How many passengers fit in a Bangkok minivan?**

The Toyota Hiace lists 9–12 seats and separately six bags; the Toyota Commuter lists 12–14 seats and separately eight bags — the Commuter is the larger vehicle on both counts. Above fourteen passengers the answer is more than one vehicle, and in practice the switch happens earlier than the seat count suggests, because luggage competes with the rear row for space.

**What is the difference between a minivan and a minibus in Thailand?**

In everyday Bangkok usage there is no reliable difference: both words are used for the same Hiace and Commuter class of vehicle. Larger coaches are a separate category. The practical question is not the label but the two numbers — how many passengers, and how many suitcases.

**Can 14 people and their suitcases travel in one van?**

Rarely, if the suitcases are checked luggage. The published figures do not establish whether fourteen passengers and eight bags fit simultaneously. Eight bags is also the maximum published anywhere in this fleet, so a fourteen-person party with a suitcase each needs two vehicles or a dedicated luggage van.

**Do you provide several vans for a large group?**

Yes, and for groups over about twelve with luggage it is usually the right answer. Vans booked as a convoy are dispatched together and coordinated to arrive together, which matters for a conference shuttle or a wedding where a staggered arrival is the problem you were trying to avoid.

**Is a minibus cheaper than several cars?**

Compare written totals for your exact group, bags and itinerary. A minibus can keep everyone together, but it is not automatically cheaper than several cars. Include any waiting, tolls and extra stops in the comparison.
