THE JOURNEY, CONSIDERED

Make room for the journey.

Bangkok to Pattaya is roughly 150 km and typically takes 2 to 2 hours 30 minutes by road via Motorway 7. A private van does it door to door, carries the luggage, and can either drop you off or stay for the day. The published Hiace ten-hour base is 9,000 THB, not a total for this route; request a quote per route.

The drive, and what actually slows it down

Motorway 7 from the eastern edge of Bangkok is a fast, straightforward road, and the 150 km is rarely the problem. Getting out of Bangkok to reach it is. Leaving Sukhumvit at 08:00 on a weekday can add forty minutes before you have even joined the motorway, which is why departures are usually planned either early or after 10:00.

Friday evenings and Sunday returns are the other known pinch: the whole city appears to be going to the coast and back at the same time. If your schedule is flexible by an hour, moving it is worth more than any routing cleverness.

Coming straight from Suvarnabhumi rather than central Bangkok shortens the run considerably — the airport is already on the eastern side, roughly 120 km from Pattaya and about 90 minutes to two hours. For a beach-bound arrival, that is usually the better plan than transferring through the city: see Suvarnabhumi transfers.

The honest warning on day trips: the drive takes a bite out of the ten hours at each end. Decide what you actually want to see, work backwards from the return, and be willing to buy the eleventh hour rather than rushing the last stop.

Before you book this route

  • Name both addresses, not just the city. Hotel driveways, beach roads and temple entrances are not interchangeable.
  • Agree the return time in writing if it is a day trip, and ask what an extra hour costs.
  • Ask about the out-of-province allowance and, for an overnight, the driver's accommodation. Any applicable charge belongs on the written quote.
  • Plan the stops. A comfort stop each way is normal; a lunch stop is a decision with a time cost.
  • Count the luggage if you are moving hotels rather than day-tripping.

Common questions

Bangkok to Pattaya: common questions

How long does it take to drive from Bangkok to Pattaya?
Typically two to two and a half hours for roughly 150 km via Motorway 7. The motorway itself is quick; the variable is clearing Bangkok at the start. From Suvarnabhumi Airport it is shorter — about 120 km and commonly 90 minutes to two hours — because the airport is already east of the city.
Is a private van cheaper than a taxi to Pattaya?
Private transfers on this route are priced per vehicle, so for a group a van is worth comparing with other transport once passenger and luggage requirements are known. A metered taxi may undercut it for two people travelling light. What a booked van buys on this route specifically is a driver who has agreed to the journey in advance — not every Bangkok taxi driver wants a two-hour run to the coast at 21:00.
Can we stop on the way to Pattaya?
Request comfort breaks and any sightseeing or meal stops when you book. Confirm their effect on the route, waiting time, total price and arrival time; a one-way transfer does not automatically include detours.
Can we do Pattaya as a day trip from Bangkok and come back the same night?
A return day trip can be planned, subject to availability. Include both drives, visits, breaks and a traffic buffer in the schedule. The published Bangkok day rate is a base indication, not a confirmed Pattaya return price; request the total and any extra-hour or distance charges.
Will the van wait for us in Pattaya?
On a day-trip booking, yes — the van and driver stay with you, your bags stay aboard, and the vehicle is your air-conditioned base between stops. On a one-way transfer the van leaves after the drop-off, so if you want it later, book the day rather than two separate transfers.
