Rates and inclusions

Van rental prices in Bangkok, and what they include

The rate card is the easy part. The money is usually lost in what a quote does not say — fuel, tolls, parking, waiting, overtime and the driver’s night away. This page covers both.

THE JOURNEY, CONSIDERED

Clarity before you travel.

Pimstarter publishes starting rates of 1,400 THB per hour, 5,200 THB for five hours, 9,000 THB for ten hours, 52,000 THB per week and 156,000 THB per month. What moves the final figure is the vehicle class, the hours, waiting time, distance outside Bangkok and extras such as child seats. Every booking is confirmed in writing with those items listed, and the written confirmation is the only binding price.

The eight things a Bangkok van quote should state

This is the single most useful list on the site, and it applies to any operator you ask, not only to us. In this market the gaps between quotes are rarely in the headline number — they are here.

  • Vehicle class, by model. “A van” is not a specification. A Lexus LM day and a Toyota Commuter day are different products at different prices.
  • Hours included, and the overtime rate. A ten-hour day that starts at 08:00 ends at 18:00. Ask what an eleventh hour costs before you need it.
  • Fuel, expressway tolls and parking. Operators in this market differ on all three. Get a yes or no for each, in writing.
  • Waiting time at the airport. How long is free after landing, and what applies after that — for a delayed flight as well as a slow immigration queue.
  • Out-of-province surcharge and the driver’s overnight cost. Ask whether either applies to your route; crossing a provincial boundary alone does not establish the charge.
  • Child seats. How many, what type, and for which ages. Provide children’s ages and sizes and confirm suitable restraints and installation before travel.
  • What happens if your flight moves. Rebooking, no-show and cancellation terms, with the cut-off times.
  • Payment and receipt. Deposit, balance, accepted methods, and whether you get a company-name invoice for expenses.

Base rate versus the total for your journey

The published homepage amounts match the Toyota Hiace base prices in Pimstarter’s public vehicle data. Other models have their own prices. The vehicle data also lists service-fee, night, weekend, peak-period, airport and distance rules, plus a long-term discount rule. Their presence does not establish which apply to your booking or how they combine.

Ask for a written total for your model, route, date and hours, with applicable fees and any discount identified. Confirm fuel, tolls, parking, waiting and extras individually. A base amount is not an all-inclusive route quote.

What changes the price

The variables, in roughly the order they matter.
VariableEffect on the quote
Vehicle classThe largest single factor. Luxury and premium+ classes are a different product from the entry vans.
HoursHourly hire is the most expensive per hour; the ten-hour day is the cheapest per hour.
Waiting timeConfirm the waiting allowance, overtime rate and billing increments in writing.
Distance outside BangkokPattaya, Hua Hin, Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi are priced per route, not per hour.
Overnight staysAsk whether the itinerary requires an out-of-town allowance or accommodation for the driver.
Child seats and extrasUsually a small line item, but one that must be requested — not assumed.
Season and timingSongkran, New Year, major conventions and 05:00 departures tighten availability.

How to compare two quotes properly

  1. Normalise the vehicle. Put model against model. Different models have different base prices; compare the same model and itinerary.
  2. Add the exclusions back in. Fuel, tolls and parking on a full Bangkok day are not a rounding error. A quote that excludes them is not the cheaper quote until you have added them.
  3. Price the eleventh hour. Multiply the overtime rate by the two hours you will probably run over, and compare again.
  4. Check what happens when the flight is late. The cheapest airport transfer is the most expensive one if a two-hour delay voids it.

Paying and confirming your booking

The published rates are in Thai baht. Ask which payment methods are available for your booking, when a deposit or balance is due, and whether the required receipt or company invoice can be provided. A submitted booking request is a request: obtain written acceptance of availability, route, vehicle, total and essential extras. Clarify the booking status if you receive only a payment receipt.

Common questions

Prices and inclusions: common questions

How much is a van with driver for a full day in Bangkok?
Pimstarter's published starting rate for a ten-hour day is 9,000 THB, with half days from 5,200 THB and hourly hire from 1,400 THB. The figure for your day depends on the vehicle class and the route, and arrives in writing before you commit. Compare written totals for the same vehicle, route, hours and inclusions.
Are fuel and expressway tolls included?
Operators in Bangkok genuinely differ on this, which is why it belongs in writing rather than in an assumption. Ask for fuel, expressway tolls and parking to be confirmed individually on your quote. A rate that excludes all three can easily cost more on the day than a higher rate that includes them, particularly on a full day that uses the expressways and parks in central malls.
What happens if we run over the booked hours?
Overtime applies, normally charged by the started hour, and the rate belongs in your confirmation before travel rather than in a conversation at 19:00. If you already suspect the day will run long — a dinner after a full sightseeing day is the classic case — it is cheaper to book the extra hours up front than to extend on the day.
Do you charge per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle. A seven-seat van costs the same whether three or seven people travel in it, which is why vans beat per-person transport economics from about four passengers upwards. What does change with the headcount is luggage: see the seats and luggage guide before assuming the published bag count applies to a full vehicle.
Can I get an invoice for my company?
Yes. Business bookings can be invoiced in a company name with the hours, extras and tolls itemised, which is normally what an expense policy needs. Mention it when you book rather than after the trip, so the booking is raised against the right entity from the start.
Is a deposit required?
Deposit and balance terms are set out in your written confirmation, and they vary with the size and timing of the booking — a single transfer and a month of daily hire are not handled the same way. Ask which payment methods are available for your booking.
