Choosing transfer, hourly, daily or monthly van hire in Bangkok

Hourly for a single run, a half or full day when the van should wait, weekly or monthly when the schedule repeats. This page explains which to ask for, and what a good quote states.

THE JOURNEY, CONSIDERED

One vehicle. Your itinerary.

Ask for a transfer when you need to get from A to B and the van can leave. Ask for hourly hire when it must wait but the day is short. Ask for a half or full day when there are several stops — from 5,200 THB for five hours and 9,000 THB for ten. Ask for weekly or monthly hire when the same journeys repeat.

What “with driver” actually gets you

  • Someone who knows the building. Which gate accepts vans, where the drop-off is at ICONSIAM, which hotel driveway has a height bar. This is most of the value and none of the brochure.
  • A vehicle that waits. You leave the water, the jackets and the shopping in the van and walk into the meeting.
  • Traffic judgement in real time. Expressway or surface roads, leave now or wait twenty minutes — decided by someone who drives this city every day.
  • One contact for the whole day. No re-booking at every stop, no surge pricing when it starts raining, no explaining the next address in a language you do not share.
  • Help with the bags. Stated plainly because in practice it decides how an arrival with four suitcases and two children actually goes.

Hours, waiting and overtime — the part that causes disputes

Almost every argument about chauffeured hire in Bangkok comes down to hours. Three habits prevent it.

  1. Fix the clock at both ends. A ten-hour day from 08:00 finishes at 18:00. If your dinner reservation is at 19:30, you are buying eleven or twelve hours, so price them now.
  2. Ask the overtime rate before you need it. Bangkok operators commonly charge by the started hour. Knowing the figure turns a surprise into a decision.
  3. Treat airport waiting separately. Waiting after a landing is not the same as waiting outside a restaurant. Confirm how much free time follows touchdown, and whether a delayed flight is handled differently from a long immigration queue.

Full detail on all of this, including what to insist on seeing in writing, is on the rates and inclusions page.

Picking the vehicle

Seat and luggage figures as published on each Pimstarter vehicle page. Electric guest counts exclude the chauffeur; electric luggage capacity and pricing are on request. These separate figures do not confirm that both maxima fit together. Ask for the actual seating and luggage configuration.

Common questions

Hiring a van with a driver: common questions

What is the difference between a transfer and hourly van hire?
A transfer is priced for one journey, A to B, and the van leaves once you have arrived. Hourly hire keeps the vehicle and driver with you, so you can hold the van through a meeting, a meal or a shopping stop. If you have more than two stops, a half or full day is usually cheaper than adding hours one at a time.
Is the driver's waiting time included?
Ask which waiting periods are covered by your booked hourly or daily window. Waiting beyond the booked window is overtime, and airport waiting after a landing is normally treated as its own allowance. Get the free waiting period, the overtime rate and the flight-delay rule stated in your written confirmation.
Can I hire a van with a driver for a whole month in Bangkok?
Yes. Monthly hire starts at 156,000 THB and weekly at 52,000 THB. It is the usual arrangement for relocating families, long corporate assignments and production crews, and it normally means a consistent chauffeur rather than a different driver each day. Daily hours, rest days and the mileage area are agreed up front — see long-term hire.
Do your drivers speak English?
Thai is the first language of the chauffeur team, and English-speaking chauffeur availability needs to be confirmed for your date. If your day depends on conversation — a sightseeing route, a client you are hosting, an elderly passenger travelling alone — ask for it when you book rather than hoping on the day. A chauffeur booking does not automatically include tour guiding; guiding inside attractions is a separate arrangement.
How far in advance should I book?
For a standard Bangkok transfer, a day or two is usually enough. For a specific vehicle class — the Lexus LM in particular — for a 14-seat Commuter, for several vans on the same morning, or for travel over Songkran, New Year and major convention weeks, book as early as you can. Child seats and English-speaking chauffeurs are also subject to confirmation even with advance notice.
