Seats and luggage
How many seats and suitcases fit in a Bangkok van
The commonest booking mistake in this city is choosing a van on seat count. Luggage is the real constraint, and the two numbers fight each other.
THE JOURNEY, CONSIDERED
The right space for everyone.
Published luggage figures assume the van is not full of people. The rear row is where bags go, so every passenger in the back row removes bag space. Count passengers and suitcases as two separate numbers, send both, and size the van to whichever is tighter.

What those numbers mean once people are aboard
The figures above are accurate and they are also optimistic, in the ordinary way that all vehicle specifications are: each one assumes a reasonable load rather than a maximum one. In a van, luggage lives in the space behind the last occupied row. Fill that row with passengers and the luggage has nowhere to go but the aisle and laps.
| Your party | Realistic choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2–4 adults, checked luggage | Alphard, Majesty, Staria | Comfortable, with the rear row free for bags. |
| 5–6 adults, checked luggage | Staria or Hiace | Six in an Alphard works only with cabin bags; six with suitcases wants the larger body. |
| 7–8 adults, cabin bags only | Vito, Majesty or Staria | Fine for a city day; not for an arrival. |
| 7–8 adults, checked luggage | Hiace or Commuter | Six published bags in the Hiace, eight in the Commuter — count your suitcases against both. |
| 9–12 adults, checked luggage | Commuter, or two vans | The Commuter's eight bags is the fleet ceiling; twelve suitcases will not fit one vehicle. |
| 12–14 adults, cabin bags only | Commuter | Maximum headcount over short distances. |
| 12–14 adults, checked luggage | Two vehicles | This combination does not fit one van, whatever the seat count says. |

Things that take more room than people expect
- Child seats. Each occupies a full seat, and a rear-facing seat needs depth in front of it. Provide children’s ages and sizes and confirm suitable restraints and installation before travel.
- Pushchairs. A travel buggy folds small; a full-size pram is roughly a large suitcase.
- Golf bags. Send their dimensions and number; there is no verified suitcase-equivalence rule.
- Shopping. A Bangkok shopping day arrives back at the van with volume nobody allowed for. Keeping the rear row free is the fix.
- Musical instruments and sample cases. Shape matters more than weight; describe them rather than counting them.
- Wheelchairs and mobility aids. Tell us the type and whether it folds, so the right vehicle is sent.
Sizing it in four steps
- Count passengers, including infants. An infant in arms still needs a restraint and therefore a seat.
- Count bags by size. Large checked, small checked, cabin. Then add the awkward items by name.
- Take the tighter constraint. If the luggage needs a Hiace and the seats need an Alphard, you need the Hiace.
- Add the day. Three hours to Hua Hin in a full Commuter is a different proposition from twenty minutes across Sathorn. On long runs, size up.
When two vans beat one bigger van
Above roughly ten passengers with checked luggage, two vehicles are not a failure of planning — they are the plan. Booked as a convoy they are dispatched together and arrive together, which is what a conference shuttle or a wedding party actually needs. One van that technically seats everyone but leaves the bags on the kerb is the worse outcome. See minibus and minivan hire for group arrangements.
